BIO BLOG #1 ---Pollution

Pollution is a factor that affects the environment and the biodiversity of the environment. The effects of pollution can range from mild to severely harmful.

I personally know that air pollution is a big deal. I used to live in an area where hardly any cars drove by. Now i like in a busy area where cars drive by all the time. I have noticed that it is harder to breathe and my skin was irritated in the beginning. Now I have gotten used to the place. I'm doing ok, but a humidifier is needed in my house in order to be healthy and breathe properly........which i still did not get even under the doctors notice.

In this picture you can see the layer of pollution that is covering the sight of Toronto. If this were to taken as a picture 100 years ago. The picture would look more different because of the lack of pollution back then. Compared to 100 years ago, we now contribute to pollution a lot. we drive cars, smoke and have more factories.

There are different types of pollutants. Humans do contribute to pollution. Humans are trying to change their effects on the environment positively. There are hybrid cars which are now being more frequently used.Humans do have a huge part of creating pollution but there are organizations that lead towards doing the opposite of polluting.

The POLLUTION PROBE is an organization that leans toward changing the pollution statistics, they are dedicated to having positive environmental changes.
They have 4 main programs
- Air: reduce acid gas emission, improve public transit, more cleaner vehicles and fuel
- Water :water ethic that is global on its outlook
This program has worked with the great lakes and has gained success.
-Energy:energy efficiency, energy from renewables, emission reductions from working plants.
This program previously had a successful promotion on energy conservation. This project is still in work at the Ontario Energy Board hearings.
-Indoor Environments:initiative is to improve the quality of indoor human health, climate change , water quality and smog.

This organization hold events which supporters can come and help change the pollution statistics. They also give people to support online. They also have workshops and forums to promote change in pollution and tech people about it. They do work in partners with other organizations to do events and other things.

Humans are all controlling these operations which are being held. So humans can affect the biodiversity of our ecosystems. By improving the ecosystem they help the biodiversity of it as well. By decreasing pollution, the environment becomes a stronger place for species to survive.

  1. I'm really glad you chose to do your topic on pollution. Pollution is a rising concern here in Toronto, and we need to take action now! The thing about pollution is that human beings are the one to blame, we need to rethink are actions, because anything we do could be a harmful effect to our planet.

We should try carpooling and taking the ttc instead of having only 1 person driving a vehicle. We should also try shopping online instead of having to actually go to a mall. We should also try to ride a bicycle to get places.

You did a good job with your blog. However, I wish you used a picture of Toronto 100 years ago to demonstrate how the air used to be cleaner than it is now. That way you could have had a more powerful blog entry. The pollution probe sounds like a good organization, but what are the goals that they have? Have they achieved any goals so far? What are some of the organizations they are partners with? What are some things we can do to prevent pollution? Was your topic on just air pollution, or pollution in general?
